Ski lifts at the ski resort Zugspitze
The ski area on the Zugspitze is served by two modern 6-seater chairlifts with weather protection hoods as well as two drag lifts. The Schneefernerkopf drag lifts are out of operation.
Access to the Zugspitze from Germany is usually via the fast, comfortable, and scenic Zugspitze cable car, which starts at Eibsee near Grainau. From Ehrwald in Austria, you can also reach the summit with the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn. On Germany’s highest mountain, the 360° panorama impresses with views of over 400 peaks in 4 countries. From the summit, the Gletscherbahn takes you about 200 vertical meters down to the ski area at Zugspitzplatt.
An alternative ascent is possible with the cogwheel train. The Bayerische Zugspitzbahn starts in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and takes 75 minutes to reach the Zugspitzplatt. Stops along the route include Hausberg, Kreuzeck-/Alpspitzbahn, Hammersbach, Grainau, and Eibsee.
The Zugspitze cable car is a record-breaking lift and set three world records when it opened in 2017: the world’s highest cable car support at 127 meters, the greatest overall height difference in one section at 1,945 meters, and the world’s longest free span at 3,213 meters.
