About 20 kilometers northwest of Winthrop lies Mazama, a small town at the "end of Highway 20." In winter, the road ends here because Highway 20 is closed due to avalanche danger. Right next to the Freestone Inn Hotel is the helicopter landing pad of North Cascade Heliskiing. Guests check in at a cozy and welcoming lodge, where they can choose their rental skis and change in peace. The atmosphere is very family-like, as a maximum of 12 people can go heliskiing per day. Small snacks and water are offered free of charge, and during the heliski day, guests receive drinks, sandwiches, and chocolate as a little refreshment in the helicopter. Once all formalities are completed, you board the helicopter right in front of the lodge, which then takes you up into the breathtaking "Alps of the USA."
The runs are simply wonderful, taking you over wide powder slopes and through steep canyons. There is so much snow here that you can safely glide over almost all slopes and through the canyons. The mountains resemble those of the Alps, and at times you might think you are skiing below the Matterhorn or the Zugspitze. The guides and the experienced pilot provide guests with a first-class ski day. After an eventful day of heliskiing, everyone gathers for a beer and reminisces about the fantastic powder runs. "It was an unforgettable day, without stress or rush, but with wonderful powder and amazing descents."
