In addition to the state-of-the-art lifts, there are many drag lifts on the glaciers, and only one hotel is located directly at the valley station.Description Stubai Glacier (Stubaier Gletscher)
At the end of the Stubai Valley, the 3S Eisgratbahn and the 6-seater Gamsgarten gondola lifts start from the Mutterbergalm, taking you up to the Stubai Glacier—one of the most beautiful glacier ski areas in Austria. The 3S Eisgratbahn takes you up to 2,900 m in just 10.7 minutes, while the Gamsgartenbahn reaches 2,620 m.
From Eisgrat, you can continue higher with the Schaufeljoch eight-seater gondola to the Jochdohle, or ski down to Gamsgarten on a wide, easy to intermediate slope. From Gamsgarten, the detachable six-seater Eisjoch chairlift with weather protection hoods (the world’s first six-seater chairlift with 7 pylons on glacier ice) takes you up to Eisjoch (3,150 m), and the Rotadl eight-seater chairlift brings you up to Rotadlkopf (3,011 m). From Rotadlkopf, you can cross over to Daunferner or ski back to Eisjochferner.
From the top station of the six-seater chairlift, you can take the connecting Windachferner lift to Gaiskarferner, which is served by a drag lift. Here you’ll also find the Stubai Zoo snowpark for those who find regular piste fun not daring enough.
The Pfaffengrat double chairlift connects Gaisskarferner with the Fernauferner run. Fernauferner is served by a modern six-seater chairlift with weather hoods, easy and intermediate slopes, as well as a ski route. Thanks to the Fernaubahn, there is also an easy transition to Gaiskarferner—making the ski carousel around the 3,333 m high Schaufelspitze perfect. From Windachferner, you can also take the Wildspitz double chairlift up to the highest point at 3,210 m and then ski down a gentle slope over Daunferner back to the valley. Daunferner is served by two parallel drag lifts.
By the way, the Stubai Glacier ski area consists of five glaciers: Eisjochferner (the largest of the five and the main area of operation), Daunferner, Windachferner, Gaiskarferner, and Fernauferner. The perfect view not only of these but also, in good weather, far beyond the surrounding mountains, is offered by the “Top of Tyrol” viewing platform at 3,120 m. The platform is accessible on foot via stairs from the top station of the Schaufelspitzbahn.
Already in autumn, the Stubai Glacier offers skiers and snowboarders fun on fantastic slopes across several glaciers, with many runs to choose from. Beginners will also enjoy the Murmele six-seater chairlift at Gamsgarten. The BIG Family Ski-Camp for children is also located at Gamsgarten.
In winter, you’re spoiled for choice: take the cable cars back down to the valley, or dare the Wilde Grub’n (a 10 km high alpine descent) down to the valley. Thanks to snowmaking on the lower section, you’ll find excellent piste conditions all the way to the base station.
For a break on the glacier, you have the Jochdohle at 3,150 m, the Panoramarestaurant Eisgrat and the gourmet restaurant Schaufelspitz at Eisgrat, the Gamsgarten restaurant right on the glacier, the Bödelehütte at the base station of the Fernau chairlift, and the Dresdner Hütte at the Fernau mid-station.
At the end of a wonderful day of skiing, don’t miss stopping by the Mutterbergalm for après-ski, or drop into one of the cozy alpine huts along the road to Neustift.
