Highlights:
Highest ski resort in Austria (3,440 m), magnificent panorama, view of the Wildspitze, wide slopes, modern facilities on the glacier, viewpoint at Hinterer Brunnenkogel, high-altitude cross-country trail, shuttle buses at the parking lotNegative points:
No official valley run from the glacier, sometimes waiting times when the Glacier Express is busyDescription Pitztal Glacier (Pitztaler Gletscher)
The parking lots stretch from Mandarfen to the Gletscherbahn, and if you have to park further away, the ski bus will take you directly to the entrance. There is also a ski bus service from the villages in the Pitztal.
The Gletscherexpress, an underground subway, takes you up through the 3.7 km long tunnel to the mountain station at 2,840 m in just 8 minutes, overcoming an altitude difference of 1,100 m.
From here, the entire glacier ski area with its additional 5 lifts and cable cars and, depending on snow conditions, up to 16 runs are available. The Wildspitzbahn takes you straight to the highest point of the ski area, the Hinterer Brunnenkogel at 3,440 m. This is also the highest point in Austria accessible by lift.
Here you will also find the highest café in Austria, Café 3440. From here, demanding and, for a glacier, long and not too flat runs are available.
On the right side, there is the Brunnenkogel drag lift, which takes you up to 3,262 m and offers two additional easy to intermediate runs, both ending again at the mountain station of the Gletscherexpress.
On the left side is the eight-person gondola Mittelberg, which leads via a mid-station (3,000 m) up to 3,275 m. Here you can choose between 4 runs, which are sunny all day. To return to the mountain station of the Gletscherexpress, take the modern six-seater chairlift with weather hoods and heated seats, Gletschersee, from the valley station of the Mittelbergbahn.
Directly in the building of the mountain station of the Gletscherexpress is also the panoramic restaurant, which offers a wide selection of dishes.
All the slopes are very wide and, for a glacier, quite steep in some sections. However, the steeper passages can almost always be bypassed, so beginners will also get their money's worth.
Before heading back down to the valley in the evening, you can enjoy après-ski at the umbrella bar right at the mountain station of the Gletscherexpress. In the valley, the fun continues late into the night at SIGLU or Hexenkessl. However, a special recommendation is the rustic Hexenkessl, built with old wood.
