The Mt. Hutt ski area on the South Island enjoys the most snowfall in New Zealand. It is located about 90 km as the crow flies from Christchurch on the eastern slopes of the New Zealand Alps. Modern lifts provide access to the slopes for skiing up to over 2,000 m. There are beginner areas, snow parks, and also freeride opportunities. The Mt. Hutt winter sports area is also popular with international ski teams as a training location.
