The Cannon Mountain ski area has a long tradition. The ski area was opened and made accessible for skiing as early as 1933. In 1946, the Austrian Baron Hubert von Pantz from Mittersill opened the Mittersill Alpine Resort ski area with a lift, right next to the Cannon Mountain ski area. Both ski areas gradually built more lifts. In 2009, the two winter sports areas merged and have since operated solely under the name Cannon Mountain. The name Mittersill Alpine Resort is no longer widely used. However, the double chairlift built in 2010 still bears the name Mittersill.
