Cannon Mountain ski area boasts a long and storied history. Cannon Mountain first opened to skiers in 1933. In 1946, Austrian Baron Hubert von Pantz from Mittersill opened the adjacent Mittersill Alpine Resort, initially with just a single lift. Over the following decades, both ski areas continuously expanded their offerings with new lifts and runs for skiers and snowboarders.

In 2009, Cannon Mountain and the Mittersill Alpine Resort were finally merged and have since operated together under the name Cannon Mountain. The name Mittersill Alpine Resort is now rarely used, but it lives on in the Mittersill double chairlift, which was newly built in 2010.

Cannon Mountain is considered one of the more challenging ski areas in the northeastern United States. The terrain is characterized by steep, direct runs, long fall lines, and an overall sporty, alpine character that is especially appreciated by ambitious skiers and snowboarders.

For beginners, the Tuckerbrook Family Area offers a dedicated space. This area features gently sloping practice hills, short runs, and separate lifts, making it ideal for children, families, and those new to skiing and snowboarding.
