Environmental protection of the ski resort Altastenberg

The mountain meadows around Altastenberg are designated as an FFH area (Fauna-Flora-Habitat). The construction of the snowmaking system was supervised by building biologists; wherever pipelines had to be laid, the vegetation cover was carefully removed and replaced after construction. The lifts and slopes have existed long before FFH areas were even established. Although drag lifts are less comfortable, they consume less energy per transported person than chairlifts. Overnight guests can use buses and trains in the region free of charge with the Sauerland Card.

Public transportation/on-site mobility

  • No direct train connection
Winterberg (6 km away, during the season bus connection for all arriving trains)
  • Ski buses
  • Scheduled buses
  • During the weekdays, regular public buses operate frequently. On weekends from late December to early March, the AstenExpress ski bus supplements the existing bus service, providing seamless connections to winter sports facilities. It runs from Winterberg train station (connection to all regular trains, free for Sauerland Card holders) to Altastenberg in about 20 minutes, and from Altastenberg it takes five minutes to reach Nordhang (entry to Skiliftkarussell Winterberg) or 15 minutes to Neuastenberg (Postwiesen ski area).
