1/11 Seilbahn Zugspitze
The Zugspitze has a new cable car. Since December 21, 2017, the state-of-the-art lift system has been transporting up to 580 people per hour to Germany's highest mountain. The cable car operated by Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG replaces the Eibseeseilbahn from 1962 on the route from the picturesque Eibsee near Grainau to the Zugspitze summit.
Three world records on the Zugspitze
The Zugspitze cable car is a record-breaking lift – at its opening, it broke three world records. The aerial tramway overcomes the world’s greatest overall vertical difference of 1,945 meters in a single section and the world’s longest free span at 3,213 meters. The cabins also pass the world’s highest steel support for aerial tramways at 127 meters. Passengers enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the sparkling Eibsee, the fascinating, steep walls and peaks of the Waxensteingruppe, and the impressive Alpspitze.
More comfort and views along the route
The route of the new Zugspitze cable car is, with only a few meters of deviation, the same as its predecessor. The stations of the aerial tramway are also located in almost the same positions. Thanks to the new floor-to-ceiling glass cabins, which can accommodate up to 120 passengers, both comfort and transport capacity have been greatly increased, minimizing waiting times. The windows are equipped with heated glass, ensuring an unobstructed view of the Eibsee and the surrounding mountains at all times. You can see the distinctive Waxensteingruppe and the Alpspitze, the Karwendel mountains, and the border between Bavaria and Tyrol. The Bavarian Schneekar and the rugged rocks of the Zugspitze north face also seem within reach. On clear days with good visibility, the view from the cable car even extends as far as Lake Starnberg and Munich.
Glass as a central material
Glass plays a key role in the architectural concept for the new Zugspitze cable car. In addition to the floor-to-ceiling glass cabins, which put the visual experience at the forefront during the ride, the stations are also generously designed with this material. Even in the valley station, visitors enjoy an unobstructed view of the Eibsee and the Zugspitze. The mountain station also features fully glazed platforms, offering impressive panoramic views as guests board and disembark. Reminiscent of the sun terrace from earlier days, there is a glazed stairwell on the south side of the mountain station with views of the Alps.
A project for the history books
The construction of the new Zugspitze cable car was a project of unique significance, not only in terms of construction and cable car technology. The project has also gone down in the annals of the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn for its size and complexity. The greatest challenges of the undertaking were the altitude and weather conditions at nearly 3,000 meters, the exposed location of the construction site on the mountain, and the logistics involved.
