Environmental protection of the ski resort SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental

The environmental protection activities of SkiWelt are exemplary. The Sonnenlift in Brixen is 100% solar-powered. A solar system is installed at the Jochbahn in Brixen. Energy is largely self-produced using a small hydropower plant. For many years, 100% renewable energy (green electricity) from Tyrolean hydropower has also been used. In summer 2025, the mountain railways in Scheffau, Söll, and Brixen established energy communities (EEG SkiWelt Scheffau, EEG SkiWelt Brixen, and EEG SkiWelt Söll), allowing the energy generated by the PV systems and the hydropower plant to be redistributed within the company to other locations.

When it comes to technical snowmaking, gentle snow production is a priority. The snow ponds are mainly filled in summer with precipitation and snowmelt. The grooming machines are equipped with a sophisticated piste snow measurement system. GPS-controlled piste management enables efficient and resource-saving snow management, resulting in significant savings in artificially produced snow and energy. In Westendorf, since 2025, a "green piste bully" has been grooming the slopes.

Ski buses in all locations take guests to the lift facilities. In Scheffau, Hopfgarten, and Brixen, there are free charging stations for electric cars at the parking lots. Renewable energy or waste heat is used for heating various SkiWelt facilities. All valley and mountain stations have a waste separation system, and strict waste separation is observed. There are plenty of waste bins available everywhere to prevent environmental pollution.

The mountain huts mainly use regional products and focus on sustainability. Building colors are chosen in harmony with nature, and construction projects are supervised by environmental protection experts.

Awards

SkiWelt has already received several environmental awards, such as the Ecology Award at the World Snow Awards in 2017, being recognized as a model example for ski resorts in Austria by Österreich Werbung in 2023, and the MTS Summit Award 2024, which was presented to SkiWelt in Lake Tahoe by the international ski industry.
