Change at the Tuxer-Fernerhaus to the Gletscherbus 3, numerous drag lifts on the glacier slopesDescription Hintertux Glacier (Hintertuxer Gletscher)
At the end of the Tux Valley, the extension of the Zillertal, you reach the mountain village of Hintertux, situated at an altitude of 1,500 m. At the valley’s end in Neuhintertux, about 1 km past the village, the lifts depart for the year-round ski area Hintertuxer Gletscher. From the valley, you first ascend with the Funitel Gletscherbus I or the eight-seater gondola to the Sommerbergalm at 2,100 m, then transfer to the Funitel Gletscherbus II or the parallel four-seater gondola, reaching the base of the Tuxer Glacier at 2,660 m at the Tuxer-Fernerhaus after a short ride.
Here, the 10-seater gondola (with heated seats) Gefrorene Wand takes you up to the glacier. Alternatively, after a short walk, you can transfer to the Funitel Gletscherbus III, which carries winter sports enthusiasts up to 3,250 m. From the very top, you can enjoy a wonderful panorama from the viewing terrace and the slopes, stretching over the Zillertal and Tux Alps and as far as the Dolomites. A new highlight is the Natur Eis Palast, where you can explore the glacier from the inside in just one hour.
Now, at the latest, you can look forward to the descents. Highly recommended is the run from the very top down to the Tuxer Fernerhaus and further via the “Unterm Eisbruch” run, Sommerbergalm, and Waldabfahrt all the way down to the valley. This run is 12 km long and covers an impressive 1,750 vertical meters in winter. In summer, you still have 600 vertical meters down to the Tuxer-Fernerhaus, which is a remarkable difference for a summer ski area!
Since 2004, the slope to the Tuxer-Fernerhaus has been divided, so you now have a choice between two wide descents. The run from the summit down to the two Olperer lifts is relatively steep, and these lifts take you to easier slopes and to the snow park with halfpipe. This is the ideal terrain for pleasure skiers. With the two Gefrorene Wand drag lifts, you can return to the mountain station at 3,250 m. For a break, you can ski to the Gletscherhütte with umbrella bar at 3,075 m, which also offers a fantastic view over the Alpine landscape. From here, you can ski over the Schlegeis Glacier to the chairlift of the same name, which brings winter sports enthusiasts back to the Gletscherhütte. Now you should take slope 11, which crosses the Tuxer Glacier, over to the Kaserer I + II drag lifts, where beautiful wide slopes await skiers and snowboarders. Since the 2015/16 season, the six-seater chairlift Lärmstange 2 with heated seats and weather protection hoods has offered a great increase in comfort.
From the mountain station of the Kaserer I drag lift (now without curves), you can reach the Olperer lifts, return directly to the Tuxer-Fernerhaus, or ski down the “Gletscherzunge” or the “Haxenbrecher” to the Lärmstange double chairlift. This double chairlift brings you back to the Kaserer lifts. The 2a run, however, continues to the six-seater chairlift Sommerbergalm. You should keep up your speed on the last stretch to the six-seater chairlift, otherwise you’ll have to push!
The six-seater chairlift covers almost 100 vertical meters up to the Sommerbergalm. From here, the detachable four-seater chairlift with weather protection hoods takes you up to the Tuxerjoch (2,460 m). Another drag lift provides access to an easy slope. From the Sommerbergalm, ski route 1 “Waldabfahrt” and from the Tuxerjoch the ski route “Schwarze Pfanne” lead down to the valley station of the glacier lifts and the parking lots. Slightly above, the slope branches off directly to Hintertux, so you don’t need the ski bus to return to the village.
For refreshments, there are the aforementioned Gletscherhütte, the Tuxer-Fernerhaus, the Spannagelhaus, the Sommerbergalm, and the Tuxer-Joch-Haus, all offering good home-style cooking at reasonable prices. At the end of the ski day, you can round off your day with après-ski at the Sommerbergalm or at the après-ski venue “Hohenhaus-Tenne” in the valley. The free ski bus connects the valley station and Hintertux every few minutes, so you don’t have to miss out on après-ski and can take the ski bus back to Hintertux instead of skiing down.
