Summary of the ski resort Willingen – Ettelsberg

Highlights:

The longest ski slopes in the Sauerland, cable car and six-seater chairlift, children's areas and toboggan conveyors, excellent slope gastronomy, fantastic cross-country trails, a town accessible by train with a wide range of leisure and nightlife options, and real vibrancy at the foot of the slopes.

Negative points:

Despite snowmaking, not quite as snow-sure as other areas in the Sauerland, still many drag lifts, gap in the connection between Ettelsberg and Hoppernkopf, waiting times on peak days.

Description Willingen – Ettelsberg

"Blow from the blue flame, guide me reverently to the nose. Now drink, carefully and gently, until the heart laughs within your body! The Ettelsberg will never leave your mind, Siggi’s Feuerwasser is now in your heart." Far beyond the Sauerland, the Ettelsberg Skihütte is well known – here you’ll find Siggi’s Feuerwasser, and the pea soup with sausage is served in a beer mug...

Willingen offers even more superlatives in the Sauerland – the two highest mountains, Hegekopf and Langenberg, each 843m high, as well as the highest point in northwest Germany. The Hochheideturm on the Ettelsberg proudly stands at 875m above sea level.

Willingen is situated in a valley basin, from where the surrounding mountains are accessible via ski slopes. The modern eight-seater Ettelsberg gondola lift takes you directly from the village up the mountain to 833m. From here, easy and intermediate runs start, either to the Wilddieblifte, the Köhlerhagen lifts, or back to the base station of the gondola. If you take the Köhlerhagen run, after a short walk and with the help of the Sonnenlift conveyor belt, you reach the Sonnenlift drag lift. The Sonnenlift takes you up to the Hoppernkopf at 800m. The intermediate to easy run leads back down to the valley in parallel, but you can also glide over the connecting run to the Ritzhagenbahn (six-seater chairlift). Here you’ll find easy and wide slopes. Another connecting run takes you back to the Sonnenlift.

Via the Köhlerhagen lifts, you can head back up to the Ettelsberg. Highly recommended are the runs parallel to the gondola lift. You can ski directly to the entrance of the lift, so you don’t have to carry your winter sports equipment far.

Numerous practice lifts and conveyor belts complete the offerings in Willingen. Tobogganing and cross-country skiing are a big deal here. Families will find plenty to enjoy, with a number of practice slopes and parks, and even the easy run from the Ettelsberg is manageable for beginners.

After skiing, you can enjoy après-ski in Willingen: Schirmbar, Vis á Vis Hütte, Dorf Alm, Brauhaus, Tenne, Don Camillo in the old church, Sauerland Stern, to name just a few.

In Schwalefeld and Usseln, which belong to the municipality of Willingen, there are also several small drag lift facilities.
