Willingen is the home of German cross-country skiing legend Jochen Behle. Today, the former national coach works in Willingen as the sports director of the West German and Hessian Ski Associations, also responsible for biathletes, ski jumpers, and Nordic combined athletes. There is even a ski boarding school for young athletes. Accordingly, the infrastructure is very well developed. In addition to the 48 kilometers of cross-country trails in Willingen, there are 19.5 km in the district of Usseln, 6 km in Schwalefeld, 15 km in Rattlar, and 14.5 km in Eimelrod. The snow-sure Hochheide-Loipe can be reached from the mountain station of the Ettelsberg-Seilbahn via a 0.9 km connecting trail.
