No accommodation at the ski resortDescription Snowbasin
In Snowbasin, located above Huntsville, the men's and women's downhill races were held during the 2002 Winter Olympics. From the base station, you can enter the expansive Snowbasin ski area either directly with the eight-person gondola Needles Express or the detachable four-seater chairlift John Paul Express.
From the top station of the John Paul Express, you can take the short aerial tramway Mt. Allen, also called Olympic Tram, up to 2,850 meters. This was the starting point of the men's downhill at the 2002 Olympic Games, and you can also enjoy views of the Great Salt Lake and the Salt Lake City valley. The runs from up here are all very steep and challenging, and you can ski down through open forest and plenty of deep powder on several runs back to the base station.
From the very modern and well-maintained John Paul Lodge at the top station of the four-seater chairlift, there are also intermediate, groomed runs over to the Needles Express gondola and further down to the valley. Since 1998, you can take the eight-person Needles Express gondola up to Needles Lodge in no time.
Running somewhat parallel are the Porcupine, Middle Bowl, Wildcat, and Becker chairlifts, which also take you to Needles Lodge, but require a transfer. These chairlifts also provide access to runs of all difficulty levels, so you don't always have to ski all the way down to the valley, but can enjoy yourself on the upper mountain.
Via the Strawberry Traverse or Bear Springs run from the top station of the Becker triple chairlift, you reach the magnificent runs at the Strawberry Express eight-person gondola. With a vertical drop of nearly 800 meters, you will mostly find intermediate and also advanced runs at the Strawberry Express. You could easily spend an entire day on this lift without skiing the same run twice. There are also plenty of opportunities to leave the piste and head into deep powder.
To get back to the other lifts and the base station, you can either switch to Dan’s Run in the upper third, or take the long traverse Penny Lane from the lower third to glide back to the base station. Since 2023, the DeMoisy Express chairlift also operates here, providing a quick return to the base station.
Highly recommended are the modern and very well-maintained restaurants in the ski area and at the base station. There is also a sports shop, ski rental, and for après-ski you can either listen to a live band by the open fireplace in the lodge or relax with a beer on the beautiful terrace overlooking the runs.
