Highlights:
Snow-sure, summer ski area, views of the surrounding glacier world, friendly staffNegative points:
Difficult access, older lifts in the ski area, limited facilities for children, closed in winterDescription Passo dello Stelvio (Stelvio Pass)
The ascent to the Stelvio Pass takes just under an hour to complete the 48 hairpin bends and reach the pass at 2,760 meters. The road winds picturesquely up the mountain from the Vinschgau valley. There is also a road leading to the pass from Switzerland and from Bormio. The Stelvio Pass itself is located in the Lombardy region, but most of the ski area is in South Tyrol. At the top of the Stelvio Pass, you can take the cable car up to Trincerone at 3,050 meters. Here, you transfer to the Funifor, which takes you without supports over the glacier ice up to Livrio at 3,174 meters. At this point, you can finally strap on your skis and let one of the two Geisterlifts (button lifts) pull you up to just below the Geisterspitze. From here, you can ski down a difficult or intermediate slope to the Cristallo button lift. At this lift, there are two beautiful easy runs, which offer excellent snow conditions even in the height of summer. However, before heading to this lift, you should check that the queue isn’t too long, as there can be waiting times due to the button lift. You can return to the Geisterspitze with the Payer button lift. At the Geisterlifts, you’ll also find wonderful, wide runs—intermediate at the top, easy at the bottom. An intermediate run leads from the upper part of the glacier down to Trincerone. From there, you can take the Funifor back up, or, if there is enough snow, ski all the way down to the Stelvio Pass. The valley run down to the parking area at the Stelvio Pass is usually possible until early July and again after the first fresh snowfalls from October. The ski area is closed in winter.
In addition, the second highest hotels in Italy are located at the Stelvio Pass: Trincerone (3,050 m) and Livrio (3,174 m). It is recommended to stay overnight up here, directly in the ski area, as you can then ski right up to your hotel even in summer.
