At an altitude of 820 meters, Torfhaus is the highest settlement in Lower Saxony. Torfhaus is a district of Altenau in the Harz National Park with a view of the Brocken. The ski lift at Rinderkopf has been decommissioned and alpine skiing is no longer possible. The toboggan lift continues to operate when there is sufficient snow.
