Mt. Hotham is located in the Victorian Alps in the south east of Australia. The ski resort of is located almost 400 kilometres north-east of Melbourne (around 4 hours’ drive) and is around 7.5 hours’ drive from Sydney. From Harrietville, a steep mountain road, the Great Alpine Road, leads up to Mt. Hotham and then continues to Dinner Plain. Travelling from Omeo, you arrive at Dinner Plain first and then Mt. Hotham. During the winter season, visitors need to pay a Resort Entry fee for each vehicle. This can only be paid online and must be purchased before travel. On arrival, vehicles are scanned in Harrietville and Mother Johnsons and manual checks may also be carried out. It is also mandatory to carry snow chains in the state of Victoria (except for 4-wheel-drive/all-terrain vehicles). Snow chains can be hired in Harrietville or Omeo. Significant fines of up to several hundred dollars are charged for non-compliance. Payment of the Resort Entry Fee than allows you to use the designated parking spaces along the Great Alpine Road in Mt. Hotham. Your proof of payment must always be displayed visibly in the car.
