Description Moelltal Glacier (Mölltaler Gletscher)

The Mölltaler Glacier, the only glacier ski area in Carinthia, is also the youngest developed glacier ski area in Austria. In 1983, two drag lifts and a six-person gondola operated during the summer and autumn seasons—the area was closed in winter, as the glacier road up to the Stübelesee at 2,200 m was impassable.

With the construction of the Gletscherexpress in 1997, an underground inclined tunnel railway, the area can now be operated year-round. The glacier subway transports guests in about 8 minutes over a distance of 4.8 km, from Innerfragant to the mid-station at Stübelesee. Here, a small winter ski area was also created, featuring a four-person chairlift and two short drag or platter lifts. From the mid-station, the six-person gondola takes you up to the Mölltaler Glacier.

The mountain station is at 2,800 m, the main starting point on the glacier. This is also where the "Glaspalast," the Eissee restaurant, is located. An easy slope leads to the glacier lifts about 100 m below, including a detachable six-person chairlift with weather hoods and a double chairlift running parallel up to the Schareck. Below the Schareck, at 3,122 m, wide runs of all difficulty levels attract skiers and snowboarders. Highly recommended is the black run No. 4, almost directly below the chairlifts, but intermediate skiers will also find a suitable slope here at the "Wurtenkees." The glacier ski area is also the official training ground of the Austria Ski Team and the German Alpine Ski National Team.

To return to the Eissee restaurant and the gondola, you can either glide along a flat trail or, passing the base stations of the chairlifts, carve your way to the Panorama double chairlift Klühspies, which also ends directly at the Eissee restaurant. The slope down to the Klühspies lift is mostly easy to intermediate. Here you also have a breathtaking view of the Hochwurtenspeichersee all the way to the Weißsee-Speichersee. You can reach the mid-station either via a difficult slope directly from the Eissee restaurant or via a beautiful intermediate run along the Hochwurtenspeichersee.

Since the 2011/2012 season, the Alteck four-person chairlift has opened up more beautiful slopes. Two red and one black run, as well as a variant, are available here. The chairlift starts opposite the Klühspies double chairlift.

After skiing, the Europa-Schirmbar at the mid-station is available for après-ski. As there is no valley run, you return to the valley with the tunnel railway.
