Description Mayrhofen – Penken/Ahorn/Rastkogel/Eggalm (Mountopolis)

The Penken, the local mountain of Mayrhofen, is also known as the Actionberg together with the Horberg, as it offers everything a winter sports enthusiast could wish for. A three-cable gondola leads from Mayrhofen up to the Penken. The detachable six-seater chairlift "Penken-Express" and the "Kombibahn Penken" then take you up to the Penkenjoch (2095 m).

From Hippach/Schwendau, the eight-person gondola "Horbergbahn" and from Finkenberg, the ten-person gondola "Finkenberger Almbahn" also provide access to the Mayrhofen ski area. With the detachable four-seater chairlift "Lärchwald" from the Horbergtal, the detachable six-seater chairlift with weather shields "Knorren", the bubble "Nordhang", or the eight-person gondola "Finkenberg II" from Finkenberg, you can also reach the Penkenjoch. From the Penkenjoch, intermediate runs lead down towards Finkenberg and to the six-seater chairlift "Katzenmoos", which takes you back up to the Penkenjoch. The runs down into the Horbergtal are mostly wide, intermediate slopes, but there is also the so-called "Harakiri" (Austria's steepest slope experience with up to a 78% gradient) to the six-seater chairlift "Knorren", as well as an easy run especially for beginners.

From the Horbergtal, the detachable six-seater chairlift with weather shields "Schneekar" leads up to the Horbergkarspitz, where the identical six-seater chairlifts "Unterbergalm" and "Gerent" also end. The runs down to the Unterbergalmbahn are intermediate and offer plenty of open ski terrain for off-piste skiing. The run down into the Horbergtal is either intermediate, along the detachable six-seater chairlift with weather shields "Gerent", or you can take the challenging Devil’s Run directly below the "Schneekarbahn", which covers a vertical drop of more than 600 m over 2 km. The detachable eight-seater chairlift "Tappenalm" serves the easy slopes in the Horbergtal and connects to the aerial tramway "150er Tux" and the detachable four-seater chairlift "Hintertrett-Sunjet".

At the "Sunjet" there is a huge snow park (PenkenPark). Now it's time to take the "150er Tux" aerial tramway towards the Tuxertal, because the Tuxertal not only offers the Hintertux Glacier, but also two attractive, interconnected ski areas – the Eggalm and the Rastkogel. From Lanersbach, the four-person gondola "Eggalm" starts up to 1970 m, just above the tree line. From here, you can take the intermediate forest run down to the six-seater chairlift "Eggalm Nord", or via run no. 78, past the six-seater chairlift "Lattenalm" along a connecting trail to the "Eggalm Nord". This lift takes you up to just below the 2300 m high "Beiles". Another drag lift takes you all the way up to the "Beil".

Via the Lattenalm, you reach Pfistereben, from where an easy run passes several farms and alpine meadows down towards Vorderlanersbach and Lanersbach. At the Christlerhof inn, the slope splits. If you want to head to the Rastkogel and Mayrhofen, keep left and glide directly to the four-person gondola "Rastkogel". This lift takes you up to the Lämmerbichl at 2100 m. From here, you can either take the heated six-seater chairlift with weather shields "Lämmerbichl" or the eight-seater chairlift with weather shields "Horbergjoch" (up to 2500 m, the highest point in the ski area), and then to the detachable six-seater chairlift with weather shields "Wanglspitz", which connects to Mayrhofen.

The runs at the Rastkogel are mostly intermediate to easy and all are above the tree line. To ski down to the valley or return to the Eggalm, you must take run 75 from the base station of the six-seater chairlift "Lämmerbichl", which partly follows a forest road down to Vogelaue, the base station of the six-seater chairlift "Eggalm Nord". With this lift, you go back up, and then via the intermediate run 78 and the intermediate or easy run 77, you can reach either Vorderlanersbach for the "Rastkogelbahn" or Lanersbach for the "Eggalmbahn".

To get to Mayrhofen from the Rastkogel, simply take the detachable six-seater chairlift with weather shields "Wanglspitz", which ends near the mountain station of the "150er Tux" aerial tramway. The intermediate panorama run leads back into the Mayrhofen ski area in the Horbergtal. Unfortunately, there is no valley run directly to Mayrhofen, so you have to take the "Penkenbahn" gondola back down to the valley. There is a long ski route to Hippach/Schwendau, which is only recommended when snow conditions are good. At the mountain station, two umbrella bars invite you to après-ski – après-ski is a big deal in Mayrhofen, with cozy bars to linger in, and there is also plenty on offer at the base station of the Horbergbahn.

Since the 2006/2007 winter season, Austria's largest aerial tramway has been running up to the Ahorn. Two gondolas, each for 160 people, now take winter sports enthusiasts and hikers comfortably up to the Ahorn (1965 m) without waiting times. The cozy ski area, served by a modern eight-seater chairlift with child safety, a six-seater chairlift, and three drag lifts, is Mayrhofen’s mountain for connoisseurs. The snow-covered valley run down to Mayrhofen is difficult, covering about 1300 meters of elevation, and anyone who manages it in one go is truly fit. On the Ahorn plateau, the eight-seater chairlift "Ahorn" serves an easy and very wide slope – ideal for connoisseurs and beginners, with a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains. The two platter lifts "Filzenalmlift" and "Übungslift" take you back up on the right side, and on the left side, the "Filzenlift", a drag lift, is in operation. For a break, we recommend the Filzenstadl or the Ahornhütte. After the Ahorn run, you can enjoy après-ski in Mayrhofen.
