Nestled in the dense forest, the town of Mammoth Lakes stretches from The Village to Canyon Lodge. A 15-person gondola connects The Village with Canyon Lodge and the ski area. From Canyon Lodge, you can glide up into the ski area on the detachable four-seater chairlift Canyon Express. Numerous other lifts start at Canyon Lodge and provide access to slopes of all difficulty levels. The Schoolyard Express, a detachable four-seater chairlift, and the triple chairlift Chair 7 are the ideal lifts for beginners. Several easy runs with names like Ginger Bread, Hansel, and Gretel wind through the forest back down to the valley. There are also two short drag lifts for practice. The triple chairlift Chair 8 provides the fastest connection to Eagle Lodge. From there, the detachable six-seater chairlift Eagle Express starts and mainly serves easy runs. From the top station of Eagle Express, you can reach the detachable six-seater chairlift Cloud Nine Express via the Holiday run, which takes winter sports enthusiasts to wonderful descents. There’s something for everyone here, from wide, groomed slopes to steep runs. You can cruise down to Mill Cafe on easy to intermediate forest glade runs. Here, two long detachable four-seater chairlifts start: Goldrush Express back towards Canyon and Eagle Lodge, and Stump Alley Express towards Main Lodge. The Main Lodge is located at 2,715 meters and offers hotels, restaurants, and plenty of parking. From here, among others, the eight-person gondola Panorama I starts, followed by Panorama II, taking you up to the highest point in the ski area at 3,369 meters, called Top of the Sierra. The gondola ride itself is an experience, as the last stretch goes up to the rocky summit without any support towers. The descents are just as adventurous, with steep chutes and almost vertical runs leading back down to the valley—definitely not for the faint-hearted. There is also an intermediate run that stretches over the ridge and then down the backside to the Outpost. The triple chairlift Chair 23 also leads to a nearby rocky summit and offers perfect expert runs.
At Main Lodge, there’s something for everyone—from easy to challenging runs and large terrain parks for snowboarders. The detachable four-seater chairlifts Thunder Bound Express, Face Lift Express, Broadway Express, and Discovery Chair also serve the slopes, so there are no waiting times here. After the Discovery Chair, you can take the double chairlift Chair 12 to reach the Outpost as well. On the backside of the mountain, two double chairlifts, Chair 13 and Chair 14, provide access to wide intermediate and some advanced runs. You could easily spend almost a whole day just on these two lifts without getting bored.
The lifts at Mammoth Mountain are arranged so that you always have several options to reach the runs. In addition to a perfect, fast chairlift system, there are so many different runs here that you can really let your skis fly—and the best part is, you only ever need a maximum of two or three lifts to quickly reach any point in the ski area. There’s also plenty to offer in terms of cuisine—from international to American dishes with an open grill on the terrace. The mountain huts are spread all over the mountain, and you can even stop for a break at the highest point. At Mammoth Mountain, every skier’s and snowboarder’s heart beats faster, and thanks to its location, it’s very snow-sure. As soon as the first snowstorm sweeps over the Sierra, the lifts open—and that can be as early as October.
