The Grand Tourmalet ski area connects the villages of Barèges and La Mongie with slopes and lifts. It is one of the largest in the French Pyrenees. Skiers and snowboarders can enjoy runs of all levels of difficulty. Both valley villages are accessible by ski; on the Barèges side, the entrance to the ski area is located above at Tournaboup. The highest road pass in the French Pyrenees, the Col du Tourmalet, lies right in the middle of the ski area. It is well-known from numerous Tour de France stages and is closed in winter. A highlight in the Grand Tourmalet ski area is the observatory on the Pic du Midi de Bigorre at 2,877 m. It can be reached from La Mongie by cable car. However, there are no secured slopes from the Pic du Midi, so skiing and snowboarding here are reserved for freeriders. The valley village of Barèges is a traditional thermal spa.
