GITSCHBERG JOCHTAL SKI AREA
Since the winter of 2011/2012, the two ski areas Gitschberg and Jochtal have been connected. The connection was made with the new Schilling and Gaisjoch gondola lifts.
GITSCHBERG SKI AREA
You can either take the cable car from Mühlbach or drive up the winding road to the village of Meransen, located at 1,414 m. Driving to Meransen is the better choice, as the cable car does not have a direct slope connection in Meransen.
In Meransen, beginners have access to two practice lifts. The eight-seater gondola lifts Bergbahn and Nesselbahn bring you closer to the Gitschberg. The 10-seater Ski Express gondola provides access to slopes of all difficulty levels at the top of the Gitschberg. A four-seater chairlift takes you all the way up to the summit at 2,510 m. From up here, you have a magnificent panoramic view of the Dolomites. There is also a panoramic platform with descriptions of the surrounding mountains available for visitors.
From here, you can carve your way down wide, beautiful, intermediate slopes. A detour to the Mitterwiese platter lift is definitely worthwhile—there are no waiting times and an easy slope with a wonderful panorama leads back to the Mitterwiese valley station. A short connecting trail takes you back to the other slopes in the area. Below the Gitschberg, you will find slopes of all difficulty levels. The valley run to Meransen leads from the mid-station along a long trail through the forest, directly to the valley station of the gondola lift. Even with less snow, this run is always in great condition thanks to the snow cannons.
Advanced skiers prefer the challenging Sergerwiese run down to the Ski Express. Thanks to the eight-seater Nesselbahn and Bergbahn gondolas, there are no more waiting times and you can easily reach the beautiful Nesselwiese and No. 6 slopes. Along the slopes, winter sports enthusiasts will find plenty of cozy mountain huts to stop for refreshments. In the valley, a bar awaits skiers and snowboarders.
JOCHTAL SKI AREA
From Mühlbach, you reach the village of Vals after about 7 km. At the entrance to the village, the Tasa platter lift is running, and opposite the Jochtal gondola, the eight-seater Schilling gondola starts with a mid-station on the mountain side and a connection to Gitschberg. If you get off at the mid-station, you reach the easy runs on the Schillingwiese.
On this side of the area, beginners will mostly find their terrain on easy and wide slopes. With the eight-seater Jochtal gondola on the other side of the valley, you can head up to Jochtal. The very challenging and steep (not for the faint-hearted), but perfectly groomed Mitterling run leads directly beneath the gondola down to the valley. An intermediate run also leads from the top station of the gondola back down.
At the Nockalm, a cozy restaurant, the valley runs meet and continue as an intermediate run all the way down to the valley station. At the detachable six-seater chairlift with weather hoods Hinterberg, you will find easy to intermediate runs. This lift provides access to many slopes here in Jochtal. The six-seater Steinermandl chairlift also takes winter sports enthusiasts up the mountain and opens up beautiful slopes.
The area up here in Jochtal is very well suited for families and groups, as you can always meet up again at the six-seater chairlifts. After skiing or snowboarding, you can stop by the cozy bar "Zur Mühle" and round off a wonderful day on the slopes.
