Access, Parking Bláfjöll

The Bláfjöll ski resort is located in southwest Iceland in the Bláfjöll mountains. The mountain range is also known as the Blue Mountains. It is situated only about 30 kilometers from the capital, Reykjavík. From Reykjavík, you can reach the turnoff to Bláfjöll via National Road 1. From there, it's about 12 kilometers up the mountain road to the parking areas at the ski resort. There are usually plenty of free parking spaces available. In winter, the parking lots are mostly completely icy. You can also reach the resort from Hafnarfjörður via Road 417. However, this road is not cleared, so conditions are correspondingly poor. It is best to avoid this road in winter. In general, roads in Iceland are heavily iced in winter, so studded tires are mandatory. All car rental companies only offer vehicles with studded tires during the winter. Without studded tires, it is almost impossible to reach the ski resort.

Winter Closure

Road 417 from Hafnarfjörður is not cleared in winter. The road is open, but driving on it is at your own risk.
