The Whakapapa ski area is one of the largest ski resorts in New Zealand. The winter sports area is located below the mountain peaks Te Heuheu (2755 m) and Paretetaitonga (2751 m). It stretches from Happy Valley up to Knoll Ridge and to the Far West T-Bar at 2300 m. Mount Ruapehu, at 2797 m, is the highest volcano in New Zealand and the highest point on the North Island.
