The Via Lattea (Milky Way) ski area stretches across two countries. It connects the Italian venues of the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics via the border town of Claviere with the French resort of Montgenèvre. Sestriere regularly hosts Alpine World Cup races and is a meeting point for Italian high society. In 2006, Sauze d’Oulx hosted the Olympic freestyle skiing and snowboarding events. Cesana was the venue for luge and bobsleigh competitions, while biathlon took place in San Sicario. The other Nordic disciplines were held in Pragelato. This already extensive winter sports area is connected via the Monti della Luna and the border town of Claviere with the French winter sports resort of Montgenèvre. The slopes for skiing and snowboarding are varied. From open slopes above the tree line in Sestriere, to light larch forests in Sauze d’Oulx, and fir forests on the north-facing slopes, the Via Lattea ski area offers it all.
