Ski lifts at the ski resort Portillo
Portillo has four of the world's very rare Va et Vient lifts ("Coming and Going"). They were specially built by Poma for the Roca Jack and Condor runs. People either love or hate them, but one thing is certain: it's more exciting to ride up the slope than to ski down! The Va et Vients (from the French for "coming and going") are the best solution for lifts in avalanche-prone areas where building lift towers is impossible. The Va et Vients are only anchored at the top of the mountain with a return pulley. Four or five skiers can be pulled up the mountain at once. The discs are attached to a bar, which is connected to the tow cable by a flexible rope. The ride up is very fast and feels a bit like water skiing. When you reach the top, you have to get off in steep terrain: first, the people in the middle leave the disc, then those on the sides, and the last person lets the bar with the discs go back up, so that nothing drags on the ground during the descent of the carrier. It sounds complicated, but it's really a lot of fun!
