Environmental protection of the ski resort Nebelhorn – Oberstdorf

Oberstdorf Kleinwalsertal Bergbahnen is deeply committed to sustainability with its MyMountainNature initiative. The entire Nebelhorn ski area is powered entirely by 100% green electricity from hydropower. The cable cars on the Nebelhorn even have their own hydroelectric power plant at the Nebelhornbahn mid-station, which supplies green electricity. The hydroelectric power plant generates about as much electricity as the Nebelhornbahn consumes.

When the Nebelhornbahn was rebuilt in 2021, special attention was paid to sustainable and ecological construction methods. Compared to a monocable gondola, the bicable system requires less energy and fewer support towers. The transparent station halls allow natural daylight to enter, reducing the need for artificial lighting. The valley buildings are heated with a water heat pump using groundwater.

The slope management is very environmentally friendly. The satellite-supported snow depth measurement of the snow groomers ensures not only perfect slopes but also targeted snow distribution. This reduces the amount of snow that needs to be produced. Required energy is saved and the snow melts faster. The grass can recover earlier and the turf is protected during ski operations.

Car-free travel to Oberstdorf is strongly encouraged under the motto “Leave the traffic jam behind and enjoy your vacation from the very beginning. Travel by train – fast, environmentally friendly, and especially affordable.” Free ski buses on site make it easy to reach the ski area.
