1/9 Kumme
The 10-seater Kumme gondola serves as a replacement for the 3-seater Kumme chairlift. This was destroyed by an avalanche on January 9, 2018. The new lift system further enhances the area. The modern 10-seater gondola runs from Tufternkehr via the new mid-station "im Wyss Gufer" to Unterrothorn.
Since December 2020, the new detachable 10-seater Kumme gondola has been generating excitement in Zermatt. It is the first "AURO ropeway" from Doppelmayr/Garaventa. "AURO" stands for "Autonomous Ropeway Operation" and describes the autonomous passenger operation of a ropeway. With the new 10-seater Kumme gondola, both the valley and mountain stations are unmanned—only one ropeway employee monitors the system from the mid-station. Information banners on the platforms in the stations indicate, among other things, the autonomous operation. Emergency stop buttons and intercoms for passengers are installed at the platform barriers.
The 10-seater Kumme gondola operates in two independently usable sections. The first section is about 1.3 km long and leads from Tufternkehr to the newly established mid-station "im Wyss Gufer." In the second section, guests are transported from there over approximately 1.8 km to Unterrothorn. The gondolas are labeled with the names of the surrounding mountains. As part of the project, the snowmaking system is also being expanded.
