The cross-country ski trails around Davos are snow-sure and idyllically situated in the landscape. The trails start right in the village and lead into the quiet side valleys. The cross-country skiing season in Switzerland is opened every year in Davos. Around 4,000 cubic meters of snow are stored each year under a layer of wood chips. With this preserved snow, a 1.4 km long trail is prepared as early as the end of October, allowing both Dario Cologna and amateur skiers to kick off the cross-country skiing season on snow. The Snowfarming project was developed in 2009 by the technical services of the municipality of Davos together with the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF. Since then, in coordination with the Swiss Ski national cross-country performance center, technical snow has been preserved over the summer.
