Description Red Mountain Resort – Rossland

Just a few minutes from the American border lies the charming town of Rossland. A few minutes above Rossland is Red Mountain Village with the Red Mountain Resort ski area. From the base area, you can ride the historic double chairlift, the Red Chair, up to Red Mountain (1,590 m). From here, challenging runs at the top become easier as you descend back into the valley. There is also an easy slope that essentially marks the edge of the ski area.

A magic carpet and a drag lift right next to the base area provide access to easy slopes for children and beginners, as well as a snowpark. The Silverlode quad chairlift and the Motherlode triple chairlift take you up to Granite Mountain, the highest point in the ski area at 2,075 m.

Now you’re spoiled for choice with the many challenging Double Diamond runs. There are countless options here, with the entire mountain offering fantastic descents. Of course, you’ll also find easy and intermediate slopes, such as Reno's Run, which circles the mountain. All the difficult runs on the backside of the mountain end on this trail.

There’s also the Paradise Chair triple chairlift, which serves the runs in the Paradise Area. The slopes here are mostly intermediate to easy, and you’ll find the cozy Paradise Lodge and the Constelle Clubhouse for a break. You can only return to the base area from the top station of the Paradise Chair, so don’t leave it too late— the last ride is at 3:30 pm.

Grey Mountain (2,048 m) is accessed by a quad chairlift and offers countless runs. This mountain will make any expert’s heart beat faster and offers endless opportunities to enjoy the powder snow. On weekends, a snowcat will take you up to Mount Kirkup (2,064 m).

At the Base Lodge, there are several restaurants to stop at, including The Josie Hotel. Here, you can end your ski day in style. The highlight for après-ski is definitely the Rafters Bar.

In Rossland, catskiing is also offered by Big Red Cats.
In the morning, you’ll travel from the Red Shutter Lodge by van for about 15 minutes along Highway 3B to the base station, where you transfer to the snowcats (converted grooming machines). After a brief safety briefing and avalanche beacon check, you’ll ride the snowcat for about 45 minutes up to the first run. At the top, skis are unloaded and the guides give a short introduction. A group usually consists of about 8 people and 2 guides.

Before the first run, there’s a quick warm-up, and then it’s time to hit the powder for some “Rock’n’Roll.” The runs are between 1,700 m and 2,200 m, sometimes through open forest, sometimes over open terrain. The last run usually takes you almost all the way down to the valley, along the snowcat access road, descending to 1,000 m. The guide knows the terrain very well and always leads the group safely down to where the snowcat waits for the next run. Terms like “SFD,” meaning “Straight Fucking Down,” should be familiar if you’re planning to charge through the fresh powder here.

Depending on the length of the runs, you’ll usually get 6-8 runs up the mountain per day. During the ride up, you can refuel with sandwiches and cookies so you’re ready to enjoy the wonderful snow again. You can round off your adventure-filled day in the Canadian Rockies with a beer in the outdoor hot tub.
