The area around Ruka and Kuusamo is a paradise for cross-country skiers. The trails, which are free to use, lead around the summit of Ruka and you can even glide all the way to Kuusamo. Around 40 km of trails are illuminated daily from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. Since 2002, the World Cup opening events in cross-country skiing and Nordic combined have taken place in Ruka and Kuusamo.
