Environmental friendliness of the ski resort KitzSki – Kitzbühel/​Kirchberg

Protecting the environment is a very important priority for the Bergbahn AG Kitzbühel lift operator. An extensive network of free ski buses links all base stations with the villages in the region. Following a successful test phase, electric ski buses are now in daily operation in one of the largest ski bus systems in the Alps. There is also a direct train connection at the base station of the Hahnenkammbahn lift. The KitzSki Express (bus) also runs from Munich, Holzkirchen, Rosenheim and the Streifzug (train) runs from Rosenheim. Passengers in skiwear can travel free of charge on the Streifzug train between Kirchberg, Kitzbühel and St. Johann. Charging points for electric vehicles have been installed at some car parks by the Bergbahn AG Kitzbühel lift operator. No skiing is permitted in protected forest areas. These are indicated by signs and shown on the piste map. They are also fenced off.

The new lifts are equipped with energy-saving direct drive (energy saving of 600,000 kWh/year) and the GPS-controlled snow management system guarantees even distribution of snow. This allows an enormous saving in technically generated snow and energy. The ongoing updating of the fleet of grooming machines to the latest generation EURO 6 models and a consistent programme to upgrade the over 1,100 snow generators to state-of-the-art high-performance models are among the measures taken to protect the environment. The main heating systems have been converted from fuel oil to pellets and natural gas, thermal facade insulation has been installed in some mountain restaurants. In summer too, the Bergbahn AG Kitzbühel lift operator uses a tried-and-tested system (known as ‘Waseln’ in German) at all construction sites. This involves removing the top layer of grass and humus, placing these carefully cut tiles to one side and then replacing them on the ground as soon as the excavation work is complete.

• Train connection
  The train stops directly at the Hahnenkammbahn lift in Kitzbühel and in Kirchberg in Tyrol. A ski bus runs from Kirchberg train station to the ski resort. In addition, the train (Streifzug) between Kirchberg, Kitzbühel and St. Johann in Tyrol is free of charge for passengers in skiwear.

• In the Kitzbühel-Kirchberg-Aurach-Jochberg-Thurn Pass-Mittersill area, use of all buses marked "SKIBUS" is free for holders of a Bergbahn AG Kitzbühel ski pass or with ski equipment. It is one of the largest ski bus systems in the Alps. From the 2015/2016 season, the XPress Ski Shuttle has provided a connection from the SkiWelt (Ki-West lift) to KitzSki (Pengelsteinbahn lift).
